How to Correct Your Child Without Shouting
By Nonye Chukwujama
Let’s be honest, shouting feels like the fastest way to get our kids to listen. But deep down, many of us have asked:
“If I stop shouting… what do I do instead?”
How do you discipline without losing your temper? Without damaging the bond you’re working so hard to build?
If you’ve asked yourself that too you’re in the right place.
Because real, lasting discipline doesn’t require fear. It requires connection.
Why Traditional Discipline Doesn’t Always Work
Like many parents, I grew up where discipline meant:
- Slippers flying through the air
- Long lectures and side-eyes
- Being shut down with silence or shame
Sound familiar?
But here’s the truth I’ve learned, both as a mental health nurse and a mum:
Discipline means to teach, not terrify.
Children may obey when we yell, but it’s often out of fear, not growth. And fear-based discipline breaks trust, not builds it.
What Is Calm, Connected Discipline?
Calm discipline isn’t about being soft or permissive.
It’s about setting boundaries with love, like a strong fence with a gentle gate.
When you correct your child without shouting, you’re teaching them to:
- Think through their choices
- Feel safe enough to reflect
- Trust you even when they mess up
And when they trust you, they listen better not just now, but for life.
3 Tools to Discipline Without Damage
Here are three strategies you can start using today:
1. Say What You Do Want
Instead of: “Stop shouting!”
Try: “Let’s use a quiet voice like this.”
Replace yelling about bad behaviour with teaching what to do instead.
2. Use Natural Consequences
Let the experience teach the lesson.
“If you throw the toy, I’ll need to keep it away until we’re ready to play gently.”
No punishment. Just a clear link between action and outcome.
3. Connect First, Then Correct
Before you correct, pause. Get on their level. Touch their shoulder. Say calmly:
“I can see you’re upset. But hitting isn’t okay.”
Connection opens the brain and their ears.
