Parenting can sometimes feel like a rollercoaster ride with no pause button. One moment you’re full of love and patience, and the next, you’re holding back a scream because your child just spilled cereal… again.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re about to explode, you’re not alone. In fact, managing your own emotions in the heat of parenting moments is one of the toughest, but most powerful, skills you can develop.
Why Staying Calm Isn’t Magic, It’s Muscle
As a mom and a mental health nurse, I’ve learned this the hard way: our kids’ behaviour often triggers parts of ourselves we haven’t fully healed.
Maybe their whining reminds you of when you were told to “shut up” as a child. Maybe ignoring you feels like being disrespected because you were raised to obey without question.
Our nervous system remembers. And when you’re tired or overstimulated by noise, toys, or stress, that’s when your calm can snap.
But here’s the truth:
Calm is not a personality trait or a gift, it’s a skill you can practice and grow.
3 Calming Tools You Can Use Right Now
Here are three simple tools that work even in the middle of chaos:
1. Pause & Breathe (The ‘4-7-8’ Method)
Before shouting, try this:
- Inhale quietly through your nose for 4 seconds
- Hold your breath for 7 seconds
- Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds
Repeat this a few times, even while things feel wild. It helps your nervous system reset and your mind regain control.
2. Name the Feeling, Not the Child
Instead of yelling, “You’re driving me crazy!” try saying out loud, “I feel frustrated right now.”
Naming your emotion slows your brain down and stops reactive shouting. It’s a simple way to acknowledge your feelings and choose calm over chaos.
3. Create a Calm Down Anchor
Have a small tool nearby that grounds you, this might be:
- A stress ball
- A calming mantra like “Peace over power”
- A quiet corner with soft music or scripture
When overwhelmed, I silently repeat: “My child is not my enemy. This is not war.” This anchor helps me breathe through tough moments and choose love over anger.
Your Challenge Today: Practice Pausing
Today, when you feel triggered, pause for just one moment. Don’t aim for perfection — just choose calm once.
Use a journal or our free printable (download below) to answer:
- What triggered me?
- What did I do instead of shouting?
- How did it feel afterward?
Remember, it’s okay if you shout first repairing and apologising models emotional maturity to your children.
